UNS S32205
Duplex 2205 Stainless Steel
High mechanical strength and excellent corrosion resistance for demanding industrial applications
About UNS S32205 Steel
Duplex 2205 (UNS S32205) is a stainless steel alloy containing approximately 22% chromium, 5% nickel, 3% molybdenum, and nitrogen. Its dual-phase structure—50% ferritic and 50% austenitic—gives it superior corrosion resistance compared to traditional austenitic stainless steels like 316L, while nearly doubling mechanical strength.
It is widely used in industries such as petrochemicals, marine, water treatment, pulp & paper, food processing and offshore, where resistance to chloride-induced corrosion and stress corrosion cracking is essential.
Key Features & Composition of UNS S32205
Balanced Ferrite/Austenite Microstructure
The duplex structure offers an optimal combination of high strength, toughness, and corrosion resistance, outperforming many conventional stainless steels.
Standard Stainless Steel Density
With a density of approx. 7.8 g/cm³, Duplex 2205 delivers enhanced strength without adding unnecessary weight to structures.
Wide Operating Temperature Range
Performs reliably from –50 °C to +300 °C, making it ideal for demanding conditions from cryogenic to moderately high temperatures.
Excellent Yield Strength
Yield strength ranges between 450–550 MPa, nearly twice that of 316L, enabling thinner wall designs and higher load capacities.
Superior Localised Corrosion Resistance
Highly resistant to pitting, crevice corrosion, and stress corrosion cracking, even in chloride-rich, marine, or chemical environments.
Weldability with Proper Control
Suitable for standard welding techniques when proper precautions are taken to preserve the duplex structure and ensure mechanical and corrosion performance.

Why Choose UNS S32205 Stainless Steel?
Duplex 2205 combines the strengths of both austenitic and ferritic stainless steels while minimizing their limitations. It is highly regarded for durability, mechanical performance, and cost-efficiency due to its reduced thickness requirements.
Reinforced Mechanical Strength
With yield strength twice that of 316L, S32205 allows the design of thinner and lighter structures without compromising integrity.
Excellent Corrosion Resistance
Provides superior protection against pitting and stress corrosion cracking, even in chloride-heavy and aggressive environments.
Weight & Thickness Reduction
Its strength enables the use of thinner sections, reducing overall weight and material/transportation costs.
Reliable in Harsh Environments
Effectively resists chlorides, organic acids, and corrosive solutions, making it suitable for chemical, offshore, and water treatment sectors.
